Dehradun


Dehradun located in Uttranchal state and it is the capital of Utthrakhand. It is surrounded by the shivalik hills to the south and Himalayan foot hills to the south. It is situated at the altitude of about 2,200 meter above the sea level. The climate is moderate in summer and it has many visiting places for the tourists. It is named after Guru Dronacharya - A great teacher in Mahabharat epic. The renowned religious town of Rishikesh, the queen of hills Mussoorie, the renowned sulphur springs at Sahastradhara and a part of Rajaji National Park, the quit Chakrata hills all lie in this district. Also visit the Chardhams. Dehradun has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, and currently has a population of around 550,000. It is also famous for the Doon School, which is often referred to as the Eton of India. There are several places around Dehradun too that are flocked by the tourists. The other hill resort close to Dehradun is Mussoorie. It has almost become a tradition for all those visiting Dehradun to also make a trip to Mussoorie. Then there is Dakpathar 45 km away from Dehradun. The natural beauty of the place attracts several tourists. Further ahead is Kalsi, known for the Ashokan pillar of 450 B.C. The Archaeological Survey of India preserves it.Then you may even visit Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh. It lies 51 km from Dehradun. Sikh pilgrims throng Poanta Sahib. It is believed that at the site of the Gurdwara next to the Yamuna, the tenth Guru Govind Singh wrote a major portion of the sacred Dasam Granth.

1) By Plane : The nearset Airport is Jolly Grant Airport and it is well connected with the major cities of India. There are about three flights daily from Delhi to Dehradun.

2) By Train : Dehradun is one of the major Railway Station of India and it is well connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Varansi, Gorakhpur, Chennai, Ujjain, Indore, Amritsar, Allahabad.

3) By Bus : All type of buses i.e Deluxe, Semi-Deluxe, Volvo are available from ISBT, Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi and they depart in every hour from ISBT.


Prime Attractions :

1) Robber's Cave : A magnificient spot that lies at the suburban areas of Dehradun, Robber's Cave is a best loved tourist location. Popularly called as Guchhipani or Guchu Pani it is a perfect destination to spend the holiday in a pristine atmosphere. On display here is one of nature's strange phenomena; a stream of water goes underground here and reappears a few metres away. The cave is surrounded by hills and is a beautiful getaway for those looking for peace and quiet of the hills.

2) The Museum : A unique Museum dedicated to collect and study of various subjects in relation to the origin, development and sustenance of the mankind on earth. The Museum, which is renowned as the Zonal Museum, is situated on Hardwar Road in Dehradun. It started its functioning in the year 1971. Guided tours available. Open:9AM-1PM and 2:30PM-5:30PM. Admission free. Photographs are allowed, but no flash indoors.


3) Chetwoode Hall : The Indian Military Academy. A charming little museum housing collections of 20th century military artifacts.The name Dehradun reminds one of the celebrated institution of the Indian army - the Indian Military Academy. A renowned institution, which gains credentials from world wide, Indian Military Academy boasts of the rich tradition of the vast force of India.

4) Sahastradhara : Around 14 km from Dehradun is the cold Sulphur water spring called Sahastradhara. The spring is believed to have exceptional medicinal value and the dripping caves and a bath in the Baldi River near the spring are said to rejuvenate the body and soul. Sahasradhara’s water is filled with lime, and the residues it left behind forms a projecting ridge, in the shape of a cave, on the top of which the water dance like a shower. This enchanting scenery and the lush vegetation makes this stunning spot a tourist’s dream destination, where one avail a tranquil holiday.

5) Tapkeshwar Temple : An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Tapkeshwar is situated on the banks of a rivulet. This cave temple is also known as the 'Guchhu Pani', which can be reached only after the tiring walking of more than a kilometer. The tranquility surrounds the temple sooths the tiresome voyage and the simple Darshan itself make the devotee spell bound. Legend says that it was from this cave that Lord Shiva poured milk to Ashwathama, the son of Dronacharya. This picture book site is to be visited during the time of Shivaratri, when large gathering throng here to participate the holy matrimony of Shiva with Parvathi.
